Swamp things: Bureaucratic careerists are continuing Obama-era “catch-and-release” policy with illegal aliens in defiance of Trump

Monday, April 16, 2018 by

If the Republican congressional majority wants to do something productive before potentially losing control of one or both chambers in the 2018 midterm elections, maybe they could send President Donald J. Trump legislation that reforms employment rules that make it nigh impossible to fire underperforming or rebellious federal employees.

Though the president issued an executive order recently ending his predecessor’s “catch-and-release” policy regarding illegal aliens caught inside the U.S., one lawmaker told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham last week that the Obama policy is still in practice.

That means, according to Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., illegals released are allowed to continue roaming the country, free to drift into some sanctuary city or other jurisdiction and likely disappear forever — or until they commit a crime.

“It is still happening against the wishes of the elected president. And that’s the problem,” DeSantis told Ingraham on Thursday night’s “The Ingraham Angle.” “I mean, if you have a caravan coming, they should just be stopped at the border and turned away.”

As Trump’s supporters and critics alike know, he made immigration enforcement, border security, and a border wall a centerpiece of his successful 2016 campaign. Tens of millions of Americans are sick and tired of Left-wing federal careerists flouting their Executive Branch boss and duly-elected president when it comes to following his orders to toughen up enforcement.

But what makes this insolence even more frustrating is that Trump campaigned specifically on ending Obama’s “catch-and-release” program; he signed a memorandum this month ordering it to stop.

Now granted, filtering new rules and presidential edicts down through the ranks takes some time, but supervisors get these directives immediately and, presumably, immediately pass them along to personnel serving under them, including field agents.

So this shouldn’t be a problem. Besides, Trump ordered the Department of Homeland Security in February 2017 to end the policy as well, Lifezette reported.

As for DeSantis, he said that he was chairman of an emergency subcommittee hearing Thursday that discussed actions the government can take to interdict the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S, which has climbed to its highest level since Trump took office — including groups traveling in “caravans” to the U.S.-Mexico border in a bid for asylum. “I think, you know, the consensus amongst most of the witnesses [at the hearing] … was one, Trump ordered the catch and release to be done [away with], yet they’re still doing it,” DeSantis told Ingraham. “Then, the other thing is when you have the massive border surges — that really is a godsend to the drug cartels and the amount of fentanyl and all this junk that they’ve been able to bring into our country that has caused a lot of people to lose their lives.”

Oh yeah, that’s another reason why Trump wants a border wall — to help thwart drug smuggling, especially the smuggling of opioids which, in case congressional opponents have forgotten, are at the center of a deadly epidemic (which the president is also trying to deal with).

“In the large groups, you have the human trafficking, you have the drugs — I mean, it really is a boon for the cartels,” said DeSantis. “We’ve got to get this under control.”

Yes, we do. It’s been a problem for decades longer than Trump’s been around on the political scene. And in terms of illegal immigration, he was handed a mess, compliments of Obama.

But despite the fact that Republicans control both chambers of Congress — for now — Americans are getting the “Obamacare” treatment when it comes to illegal immigration: All promises, no action.

Meanwhile, at the border, the waves of humanity, drugs, and death continue, despite the president’s instructions.

And the open-border careerists are giving their boss the middle finger.
